Description
One fan throws his head back in despair, while another jumps up and down in jubilation. Elsewhere, a fan cries tears of joy as her team advances in the playoffs, while a fan of the opponent experiences a sense of dread as his team's playoff run is terminated. Whereas the intrapersonal effects of a sporting event's outcome on the fan can be evident, the interpersonal effects of the outcome seem to be less evident. The purpose of this study is to determine how the outcome of the sporting event affects sport fans' romantic relationships. The outcome of sporting events affects its fans, especially for those fans who are committed to (or highly identified with) their team. Research has provided empirical support for a variety of outcome effects that the average person might perceive to be "obvious." For example, highly identified fans experience positive emotions after their team wins and negative emotions after their team loses (Wann, Dolan, McGeorge, & Allison, 1994). These effects can be elicited by simply reading outcome-related newspaper articles (Wann & Branscombe, 1992). Not surprisingly, sport fans are also less likely to choose to wear team apparel following a loss than a win (Cialdini, Borden, Thorne, & Walker, 1976). Similarly, game outcome may motivate sport fans to post commentary on online message boards that basks in their teams' victories (End, 2001).
